Process of Effluent Treatment in ETPs

The effluent treatment process involves various stages tailored to the specific design and requirements of the plant:
  1. Equalization:  Raw wastewater is balanced in an equalization tank to homogenize effluents before being transferred to the next stage. This step stabilizes the pH and flow of wastewater.
  2. pH Control:  According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the pH level of treated wastewater should range between 5.5 and 9.0. This step involves adjusting the pH to neutral levels to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
  3. Coagulation:  Coagulation involves the addition of chemicals like liquid aluminum sulfate to form larger particles from tiny contaminants, enabling easier removal through sedimentation and filtration.
  4. Sedimentation:  In this step, water is allowed to move slowly, enabling heavier particles to settle at the bottom as sludge.
  5. Filtration:  The water is passed through layers of sand and gravel filters to remove finer particulates. Regular backwashing ensures these filters remain effective.
